In the math-anxious brain, the mere thought of solving for X prompts the same neurological response as anticipation of physical pain, according to a new study. Math really does hurt–or at least anticipation of math does. Actually doing the work does not hurt nearly as badly. Sian Beilock, professor of psychology at the University of Chicago and an expert on math anxiety, has a new paper in the journal PLoS One explaining this phenomenon....
In a study published earlier this month, researchers found that a pair of pilot whales off the coast of the Netherlands died after sole, a type of fish, got stuck in their blowholes, suffocating them. The researchers think that the fish ended up in the blowholes as the whales were trying to eat the fish. Hakai Magazine notes that whales can dislocate their larynx in an attempt to regurgitate a problematic bit of food, which can allow the fish to pass more easily into the respiratory system....

The agency announced on Tuesday that any kid in that age group who finished their primary vaccination series at least five months ago can go ahead and get their booster. Shi Wen, the chief engineer of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp (CASC)’s attack drone family, told the Global Times that China is working on drones capable of flying from aircraft carriers. This program would be China’s response to the U.S. Navy’s UCLASS program, which proved drones’ ability to take off and land from aircraft carriers, and the U.S. MQ-25 Stingray program, which will deploy refueling tanker drones to carriers in the coming years....

The warning comes after a report from the National Toxicology Program (NTP) found that vinpocetine was associated with fetal abnormalities and miscarriage in rats and rabbits. The compound is found in hundreds of supplement products, many of which are marketed—without much evidence—as ways to improve cognition. Vinpocetine is classified and regulated as a supplement by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is similar to a compound found in periwinkle—however, it’s created synthetically, and has more in common with a pharmaceutical than with products that are typically considered supplements, says Pieter Cohen, a physician at Cambridge Health Alliance and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School....
