A study published today in the journal Nature Communications, details how tiger sharks helped a team of researchers map out a giant meadow of seagrass. The data from underwater shark-piloted cameras helped the team discover one of the largest seagrass meadows on Earth, located in the warm waters of The Bahamas. Researchers from institutions including Carlton University in Canada, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, Trinity College in Ireland, and Beneath the Waves, a Virgina-based conservation nonprofit, used satellite tags to track individual tiger sharks as they traversed the Bahamas with bio-logging cameras....

Two UCLA scientists have invented a device that uses silicone to capture the electrical charge from snow — and create electricity. Their tool is uncomplicated, small, thin and flexible, inexpensive, and — because it generates its own power — needs no batteries. With an average annual seasonal snowfall cover of nearly one-third of the Earth’s land mass, “we have a great source of energy ready to be collected,” said Maher El-Kady, a postdoctoral researcher in chemistry and biochemistry at UCLA and co-inventor of the device....

But then, in 2015, his near-decomposed body was found along one of the roadways framing his habitat, presumably hit and killed by a car. This is a common fate among Southern California wildcats. The Falcon 9 rocket has been grounded since a June 28th launch went awry. A few minutes after takeoff, a strut failure set loose a helium tank, which caused too much pressure buildup in the rocket’s upper stage. Moments later, it exploded, burning up thousands of pounds of supplies to the International Space Station. SpaceX’s comeback will send 11 satellites into orbit riding on an upgraded Falcon 9 rocket. In addition to fixing the problems that caused the June explosion, the latest version of the rocket will have added thrust as well as a few other modifications, and should help the company land the rocket after use....

In August, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged all people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or considering pregnancy to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The updated recommendations were based on a new analysis, the agency said, which had followed thousands of vaccinated participants through pregnancy.
