Ford Prototype Headlights Could Increase Driving Safety

Ford’s engineers have always sought out new ways to improve nighttime driving. Several years ago, the company introduced an adaptive front headlight system which automatically adjusts the direction of the headlight beam based on the driver’s steering wheel input. Now, Ford’s European Research and Advanced Engineering division has found a way to improve upon this tech thanks to the GPS system already built into the car. By using the vehicle’s coordinates and trajectory, the company’s new headlight system can predict the ideal way to adjust headlight output before the car ever reaches a curve....

Forests To Serve As Fire Sentinels

Current Forest Service fire sensors are spread widely, and gaps in the network can miss localized temperature and humidity changes. Researchers at MIT have proposed a solution to those gaps—using the trees themselves to power a web of additional sensors. The scientists, a group of students and teachers from MIT’s Center for Biomedical Engineering, figured out that trees carry an electric charge due to a difference in acidity between the tree and the soil it sits in....

From Our Archives How To Stash Sunlight

The Dover Sun House relied on several vats of Glauber salts, or sodium sulfate, placed throughout the living quarters. (Our illustrator depicted them as a fanciful “heat bin” in the attic.) The salts melt at 90 degrees Fahrenheit and store energy more efficiently than water. The system, devised by chemist Mária Telkes and architect Eleanor Raymond, channeled the sun’s warmth to the sodium-sulfate tanks, which meted out heat on cold or overcast days....

Fyi Why Would Someone Create A Fake Internet Girlfriend

The short answer is, some people look at the internet and, subconsciously, see a chance to experiment with identities, free of consequences. Those people can be shy or outgoing, cheerleader or geek, but there seems to be some kind of personality type that changes when given a megaphone and the shelter of anonymity. We don’t know who, exactly, will be the ones to open up–it’s even debatable if it’s an “opening up” or a chance to act out of character–but for some reason, there’s a small segment of the population that’s prone to deception, given the right forum....

Few tasks send shivers up more spines than a math problem. Expunge your fears by cracking these puzzles dubbed “Sums” by their creator, engineer Gordon Burgin. A small set of rules: The numbers in each sector of the above circle, square, and star equal the sum of the numbers in the circles that border them. Easy enough, right? A few more caveats: The numbers in the small circles can be only 0 through 9, and each digit can appear only once....

Grow Long And Healthy Hair With This Diy Rosemary Water

But lately, hair growth influencers have tried to keep it simple by focusing on one basic ingredient: rosemary. Jumping on this trend will only require you to make your own rosemary water spray. It’s simple, inexpensive, and there’s potentially a lot of hair to gain. And science backs them up. In a study published in 2015 in the journal Skinmed, researchers compared the hair growth effects of rosemary and minoxidil (the active ingredient in Rogaine) over a six-month period....

Hands On With The Polaroid Now Instant Film Camera

Compared to the Polaroid OneStep and the OneStep+ the Polaroid Now is slightly smaller, has a less boxy shape and fewer buttons. The lens on the camera automatically switches between portrait and distance modes and there is only one flash mode. Shooting with the Polaroid Now involves a simple, familiar process: Load it with film, turn it on, and fire away. During our time with the camera we found that the new auto flash and lens combo did a good job in both indoor and outdoor situations....

Health Advisors Roll Back Daily Aspirin Recommendations

But yesterday, health experts took a major step towards changing how the drug is used. The US Prevention Services Task Force, an independent federal panel that sets requirements for private insurance companies, officially recommended that for the vast majority of Americans, aspirin should be used mostly to treat heart disease, and only rarely as an everyday preventative. The new guidelines are based on a tradeoff between marginal benefits and slight risks of the drug....

Heavy Backpacks Can Hurt Kids Here S How To Send Them Back To School Safely

Buy a backpack that fits properly When you take children back-to-school shopping, they won’t base their decisions on ergonomics. “Kids, particularly the younger ones, are picking up backpacks based on ‘who’s the superhero’ or ‘what’s my favorite color,’” says Karen Jacobs, clinical professor of occupational therapy at Boston University. That’s why adults need to help them—particularly when it comes to choosing the size of the bag. First and foremost, Jacobs says, “You want to get a backpack that fits your child....

Here Are 10 Plants And Animals That Might Have Gone Extinct Without The Endangered Species Act

Announced jointly by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration—the two agencies that govern the ESA—the proposed changes aim to “improve collaboration, efficiency, and effectiveness,” but those opposing the proposal argue that it may leave some plants and animals more vulnerable. For conservationists, one of the most concerning changes is striking out language that previously prevented economics from factoring in on decisions to protect species....

Here S How Global Warming Will Change Your Town S Weather By 2080

In 2080, New York City will have a climate much like Lake Shore, Maryland. Seattle will look more like Portland, D.C. will be more akin to Paragould, Arkansas, and Austin’s closest analog isn’t even in the U.S. (it’ll be more like Nuevo Laredo, Mexico). These estimates are all courtesy of a new study in Nature Communications that finds modern analogs for what the climates of 540 North American cities will look like in about 60 years....

The longest space flight, a possible 12-year reconnaissance of the outer solar system, is about to begin. It’s called Voyager. The name is appropriate. This voyage will take two spacecraft on a journey already being called a training period for interstellar missions. Before they leave our solar system behind, these Voyagers will have trained their eyes and ears on enough planets and moons to force astronomers to rewrite their texts....

Historic Downpours In Brazil Trigger Deadly Mudslides And Floods

The mudslides were particularly damaging for the city Petrópolis. Known as the “Imperial City,” Petrópolis is nestled in the mountains just north of Rio de Janeiro’s golden beaches. Unfortunately, it was also in the direct path of the torrent. More than 10 inches of heavy rain triggered a deluge of water and mud to run down from the peaks. The force of the mudslides swept away houses and cars, completely wiping out a huge portion of the city....
